ONIX, Standards & Metadata, EU Regulations

ONIX Codelist 67 released

BookNet Canada
November 11, 2024
ONIX, Standards & Metadata, EU Regulations

Codelist Issue 67 for ONIX 3.0 has been released.* Complete listings of the ONIX codelists can be downloaded from the EDItEUR website.

  • Issue 67 stand-alone codelist documentation as a readable PDF or HTML file (open and read it in your web browser)

  • Issue 67 TXT, CSV, XML, JSON files for loading into your data management applications

  • Issue 67 XSD, RNG, DTD schema modules for use with existing XML schema files (but note that it's better to download the latest 3.1 schemas since they incorporate a couple of small improvements as well as the new Block 8)

  • The ‘strict’ XSD 1.1 with Issue 67 (the strict XSD must be updated each time there is a new issue of the codelists, as it includes some codelists within the XSD itself)

  • The online browser for the ONIX code lists at ns.editeur.org/onix has been updated to issue 67

Need help finding and using the documentation? Read this.

It should go without saying that everyone should review the document summarizing the changes and update their systems, but we've highlighted some changes of particular note for you below. This is a weighty list and we encourage you to read the whole document, not just the following highlights.

List 17 – Contributor role

New code Z06 has been added, to reflect the role of “in association with,” which EDItEUR defines as “contributor must follow another contributor with any contributor role, and placement should therefore be controlled by contributor sequence numbering to ensure the correct association. See also ‘published in association with’ in List 45.”

List 71 – Sales restriction type

It's worth a refresher of List 71 - sales restriction type as it was touched four times in this release, with two edits and two new codes.

The newly added codes are:

Code Label Note
22 To education only Sales rights (or market distribution rights) apply to supplies to educational institutions only (primary, secondary, tertiary, adult, vocational, professional, etc.)
23 Except to education Sales rights (or market distribution rights) apply to supplies other than to educational institutions

And the edited codes are as follows, with the additional clarifying edits underlined.

Code Label Note
06 To libraries only Sales rights (or market distribution rights) apply to supplies to libraries (public and national libraries, libraries in educational institutions)
07 To schools only Sales rights (or market distribution rights) apply to supplies to schools (primary and secondary education)

List 79 – Product form feature type

This list sees a number of clarifying edits following the addition of several new codes with list 66’s release in July, to support EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR). Codes 47 and 50 of that release were edited for clarity, and the following three new codes have been added.

Code Label Note
51 EUDR associated due diligence references For EU Deforestation Regulation, is a space-separated list of earlier document references to DDSs created by upstream operators that are or may be referred to in the DDS for the product as a whole (i.e., the DDS specified using code 50).
52 EUDR compliant with national law attestation For EU Deforestation regulations, a ‘flag’ indicating that all raw materials were produced in accordance with legal requirements of one or more countries within each of which there are one or more source plots, and that documentation to verify this is available upon request. is a space-separated list of country codes from List 91. Presence of code 52 and a country code acts as a positive attestation that the product’s raw materials sourced from the specified country are compliant with the national laws of that country, but the attestation is meaningful only if there is no pre-existing DDS for the product as a whole (presence of a DDS already attests the product is compliant with all national laws and that documentation is available).
53 EUDR deforestation-free attestation For EU Deforestation regulations, a ‘flag’ indicating that all raw materials used for the product are ‘deforestation-free’, and that documentation to verify this is available upon request. Presence of code 53 acts as a positive attestation that the product’s raw materials are deforestation-free, but the attestation is meaningful only if there is no pre-existing DDS for the product as a whole (presence of a DDS reference already attests the product is deforestation-free and that documentation is available).

Please refer to the document summarizing the changes for an excellent series of examples on page six that demonstrate:

  • that the trees used as raw material were of a specific species;

  • the precise location of the raw material (i.e., tree plots) for the product; and

  • the due diligence statements relating to the material used in the product, as well as the proposed attestation 'flag'.

List 198 – Product contact type & List 239 – Supply contact role

Continuing the work to address compliance requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR), List 198 and List 239 both include new code 11, product raw materials contact. Refer to this document for more information.

Data recipients take note: these contacts are B2B, and not intended for public display.

List 158 – Resource content type

Building on the numerous codes added in support of product safety declarations, List 158 sees the addition of new code 53, Product safety contacts, used when it's necessary to provide full contact details, including postal addresses, for product safety contacts at a publisher or supplier.

This new code is not recommended as a way of delivering postal addresses (as required by the EU General Product Safety Regulations). There is a separate method to incorporate postal addresses into <ProductContact> and <SupplierContact> via a minor revision of the ONIX schema (release 3.1 revision 2).

List 203 – ONIX adult audience rating

Close readers of this blog and of EDItEUR’s quarterly ONIX codelist updates will recall codelist's 54 updated List 203 with the addition of a handful of new content warning codes. Codelists 67 adds another new code, 11, Content warning (illness), to aid in the publisher’s warning that the product includes “content involving serious chronic or acute illness (mental or physical).”

*A note to ONIX 2.1 users

ONIX 2.1 users should note that codelist updates no longer apply to ONIX 2.1 and users should continue to use Issue 36. ONIX 3.0 code lists and schema modules no longer contain codes or lists unique to ONIX 2.1. You can still obtain the correct ONIX 2.1 schema and codelists from the Archived Previous Releases page.

BookNet Canada still recommends that you use and periodically update your copy of EDItEUR's best practices guide. It’s an essential ONIX 3.1 guide, but much of the information in it applies equally to ONIX 2.1.
