Tech Forum content library spotlight: Metadata

BookNet Canada
November 27, 2023
Tech Forum, Standards & Metadata, ONIX

Looking for ways to step up your professional development? Look no further than the recently revamped Tech Forum website, and gain access to a repository of all the content we’ve created and shared as part of our event throughout the years.

From video recordings of virtual and in-person presentations to slides, podcast episodes, and blog posts, we’ve got a wealth of content in your preferred format.

In our previous instalment of this blog series, we highlighted content related to marketing, today the spotlight is on metadata.

If you’re looking for something in particular, here’s a quick guide on how to leverage the power of our website’s search engine.

Give them what they need: A case study of what retailers can accomplish with good metadata

In this presentation, Kieron Smith, Digital Director at UK’s Blackwell’s & Wordery, shares insights into how they leverage the power of good metadata, from boosting discoverability to offering a seamless online search experience to their customers. Learn about the practical applications of Thema and discover why this subject classification system is richer, more browsable, and designed for how customers need the data presented today.

Sell more books with better BISAC

Sarah Lawrence and Hannah Johnston, share an overview and update of the BISAC subject classification scheme. The BISAC Subject Headings List, also known as the BISAC Subject Codes List, is a standard used across the North American supply chain to categorize books based on topical content. The Subject Heading applied to a book can determine where the work is shelved in a brick and mortar store, how major online retailers like Amazon categorize it, or the genre(s) under which it can be searched in an internal database. In this webinar you'll learn the best practices for using BISAC to classify book content, uncover codelist updates, and discover how new subject codes are introduced. Finally, Lawrence and Johnston will spotlight a subject heading of particular interest to the Canadian supply chain: codes to identify Indigenous content.

In this session for metadata mavens, #eprdctn professionals, and audio oracles alike, EDItEUR’s Chris Saynor discusses all facets of working with ONIX metadata for audio titles. What's different in ONIX for audiobooks? And how do you send good metadata for audio, including chapter-level metadata?

BookNet Canada acknowledges that its operations are remote and our colleagues contribute their work from the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Anishnawbe, the Haudenosaunee, the Wyandot, the Mi’kmaq, the Ojibwa of Fort William First Nation, the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations (which includes the Ojibwa, the Odawa, and the Potawatomie), and the Métis, the original nations and peoples of the lands we now call Beeton, Brampton, Guelph, Halifax, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Vaughan, and Windsor. We endorse the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (PDF) and support an ongoing shift from gatekeeping to spacemaking in the book industry.
