Tech Forum content library spotlight: Diversity and Inclusion

Tech Forum, Diversity & Inclusion, Standards & Metadata

Tech Forum continues to evolve and with its new website, now anyone, anywhere in the world has access to a repository of all the content we’ve created and shared as part of our event throughout the years.

From video recordings of virtual and in-person presentations to slides, podcast episodes, and blog posts, we’ve got a wealth of content in your preferred format.

In our previous instalment of this new blog series, we highlighted content related to accessibility, today the spotlight is on diversity and inclusion.

If you’re looking for something in particular, here’s a quick guide on how to leverage the power of our website’s search engine.

Best practices for equity-driven acquisitions: Shifting from gatekeeping to spacemaking

In this dynamic, action-focused session, Léonicka Valcius, Annie Gibson, Scaachi Koul, and Bhavna Chauhan, lead attendees in a collaborative, generative process to develop "Best Practices" guidelines for industry adoption. The “gatekeeping” framework of our industry is a major structural hurdle to diversity and inclusion in publishing. It's not enough to recognize our biases and stop doing harm (though that's a key first step), we need to brainstorm ways to repair the historical damage done to our cultural institutions and artists. How do we shift from "gatekeeping" and towards what attendees of SFU's 2018 Publishing Unbound conference called "spacemaking": a process that solicits, supports, and develops the work of marginalized writers and professionals?

Be seen, be heard: A workshop to help you reclaim power in your career

It's no secret that the publishing industry has a vertical segregation problem — lots of women at the bottom, very few at the top; more BIPOC and nonbinary folks at the bottom, even fewer at the top. Though addressing systemic and institutional inequalities requires much more than actions taken by those from marginalized communities, we still have great power as individuals. This workshop is for anyone who identifies as a woman, BIPOC, a nonbinary person, or LGBTQQIP2SAA and wants actionable, high-impact tools and strategies to empower themselves in their day-to-day — and in their overall career trajectory.

Inclusivity, diversity, and harmonizing the metadata supply chain: Standards at EDItEUR

Chris Saynor from EDItEUR shares how Thema, the subject category scheme for the global book trade, can be used to help identify and improve the discoverability of titles suitable for a more diverse and inclusive audience. He also talks about EDItX reports and transactional standards that are being updated for the digital age and to harmonize with ONIX 3.0 for the benefit of the book supply chain.

BookNet Canada acknowledges that its operations are remote and our colleagues contribute their work from the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Anishnawbe, the Haudenosaunee, the Wyandot, the Mi’kmaq, the Ojibwa of Fort William First Nation, the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations (which includes the Ojibwa, the Odawa, and the Potawatomie), and the Métis, the original nations and peoples of the lands we now call Beeton, Brampton, Guelph, Halifax, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Vaughan, and Windsor. We endorse the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (PDF) and support an ongoing shift from gatekeeping to spacemaking in the book industry.
