O'Reilly Announces New E-Book Conference

As the BookNetter in charge of running the BNC Tech Forum, I’ve often thought the only way our annual conference could be better is if I didn’t have to strap on heels, make-up and generally just look better than I would if I were just sitting around in my pajamas all day. O’Reilly Media has found a way to bring the best of the conference and lounging world together—an e-book conference that you can participate in remotely.

EPUB Is Growing Up

It was nearly two years ago that the IDPF released version 1 of the EPUB suite of standards and since that time the race to digital has been going full steam ahead and a lot has been learned by people and organizations who have implemented EPUB support in the real world. With that in mind the IDPF has struck up a working group for the next release of the EPUB standard. Now granted a suite of standards isn’t as sexy as releasing a new iphone app or a dedicated ereader or even debating what ebooks should cost, nevertheless standards are what drive the internet and standards will drive digital publishing and electronic reading.

I want to go back to university. Not for the (shudder) keggers or the questionable fashion choices or the unquestioned sense that I knew exactly the right way that people, all people should live (man), but instead so that I could get through four years without sowing the seed of chronic back problems later in life. Imagine how life would have been different with iPHONE TEXTBOOKS!

Self-Publishing: Harbinger of Doom or Puffy White Cloud of Hope?

I’ve recently done a spate of media interviews wherein the main topic was the “rise” of self-publishing. It’s an interesting media trend, founded largely by the appearance and development of innovative new web communities that are focusing on bringing together those interested in creating great books—who may or may not already consider themselves book professionals.
