Sustainable Publishing Tools
The Sustainable Publishing Tools are two free-to-use carbon calculators designed specifically for publishing industry professionals. The Book Carbon Footprint Calculator quantifies cradle-to-warehouse carbon emissions of a printed book and can be used to compare key carbon emissions sources in book production. The Publisher’s Carbon Footprint Calculator quantifies the organizational carbon footprint of a publishing house. Each tool may be used independently, although you’ll get the most accurate results using them together. These tools may be downloaded by one person per publishing house.
The Sustainable Publishing Tools emerged from collaboration between New Society Publishers and ECW Press, was designed by Ian Lipton at the Carbon Accounting Company in Toronto, and was funded by the Canada Council for the Arts through the Digital Greenhouse grant. French translations of the tools (available soon) are courtesy of BTLF (La Société de gestion de la banque de titres de langue française).

Learn how to use the tools
In this training session, Julie Raddysh, publisher of New Society, walks through the Book Carbon Calculator tool and shows how this data can then be used in the Publisher's Carbon Footprint Calculator. Jen Knoch and EJ Hurst, who developed the tools, provide background information and answer more detailed questions about the tools and how to use them.

Outils d’édition durables
Les Sustainable Publishing Tools (Outils d’édition durables) sont deux calculateurs d’empreinte carbone gratuits conçus spécialement pour les professionnel(elle)s du domaine de l’édition. Le Calculateur d’empreinte carbone a été inventé pour calculer les émissions de carbone de la création d’un livre à son impression, et peut être utilisé pour comparer les principales sources d’émissions de carbone dans la fabrication des livres. Le Calculateur d’empreinte carbone pour éditeurs évalue l’empreinte carbone des activités d’une maison d’édition. Même si chaque outil peut être utilisé seul, nous vous encourageons à les utiliser ensemble pour obtenir des résultats plus précis. Une seule personne par maison d’édition peut télécharger ces outils.
Les Sustainable Publishing Tools sont le fruit d’une collaboration entre New Society Publishers et ECW Press. Ils ont été conçus par Ian Lipton, de la Carbon Accounting Company, à Toronto, et financés par le Conseil des arts du Canada par le biais d’une subvention de la Pépinière numérique (Digital Greenhouse).
