Sales of books by Canadian authors and Canadian publishers up in 2025

Toronto, ON – March 31, 2026 – New insights into the Canadian print book market released by BookNet Canada

Books by Canadians made up 14% of print book sales in Canada in 2025 — up from 12% in 2024. Canadian-owned publishers made up 6.2% of the total market share of books sold in Canada in 2025, up from 5.6% in 2024. Every Salad Ever: From Grains to Greens and Pasta to Beans Plus Every Salad in Betweens by Greta Podleski was the top-selling book by a Canadian author as well as from a Canadian-owned publisher.

The top-selling English language print book in Canada last year was The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About by Mel Robbins and Sawyer Robbins, according to new research released by BookNet Canada. Sales of this title largely contributed to a 22% increase in the Self-Help category when compared with 2024.

For the eighth year running, two out of every five print books sold in 2025 in both the English- and French-language markets in Canada were categorized as either Juvenile or Young Adult (YA). (Top-level highlight data for the French-language market are provided by the Société de gestion de la Banque de titres de langue française (BTLF).) Dav Pilkey took the top-selling spot in the English-language Juvenile category for the sixth year in a row with Dog Man: Big Jim Believes.

Select data on the circulation of library books in Canada is also included in The Canadian Book Market 2025. Juvenile books made up 51% of library circulations in 2025. The most popular subject category in Canadian libraries was Juvenile Fiction / Humorous Stories. The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny was the top loaned book by a Canadian author in Canada last year.
