Easier with BookNet: Finding accessible digital products

In this new instalment of the Easier with BookNet series, we’ll share a few tips on how you can find accessible titles using CataList’s search tools. CataList is BookNet Canada’s online catalogue service and order management tool. If you don’t have an account yet, you can request one here. Basic accounts are free for book retailers and library staff.

We know that it can be difficult to find accessible books because accessibility information isn’t always front and centre. With our accessible products search feature we have made finding these titles easier for you.

Step 1: Start an advanced search

You can browse digital accessible products with the click of a button on CataList. Simply navigate to the Advanced Search form and tick the Accessible products box. This will ensure your search returns only those titles that contain accessibility features or information.

Feel free to make things easier on yourself and narrow down your search to include specific subjects, price ranges, publication date ranges, and more, depending on what you’re looking for. For example, let’s look up any accessible Fiction books that are currently available.

Step 2: Filter your results

Once you have your results, it’s time to start refining them. In the left sidebar, click the Accessibility section to view the list of available accessibility information and features. You can select one or more features that meet your criteria by clicking the Accessibility features checkbox to reveal more options. For example, let’s limit our search to titles that contain print-equivalent page numbering or short alternative descriptions.

Step 3: Gain insight into a title’s accessibility

You can also find out more detail about the accessibility features of individual books. View the title information page for any book and expand the Accessibility section of the sidebar to view all of the accessibility features of the book as well as any certifications it might have. This view will offer you the most information to help you decide whether the book meets your needs.
