BNC Technology Forum 2010

Calculated Risk:

Adventures in Book Publishing

The BNC Technology Forum is Canada's answer to O'Reilly Media's Tools of Change. Since 2007, we've brought together innovators from inside and outside the book industry for a day of idea-expanding, skill-building and connection-making.

The fourth annual BNC Technology Forum is taking place on Thursday, March 25th, 2010 in Toronto, ON. We're looking for smart, engaging and daring speakers who underline every leap of faith they take with a solidly constructed net.

Our ideal candidates have experience developing and implementing new business models, expanding revenue streams or developing the tools that support the next generation of book publishing.

Call for Proposals

We are interested in receiving proposals for presentations that explore these and other topics:

  • Case studies in new business models: what's worked? What hasn't? How do you determine whether to take the plunge?
  • The evolution of bookselling: understanding and responding to the changing retail landscape
  • The price of eBooks: consumer demand vs. the reality of publishing, P&L planning, current trends and future possibilities
  • Future of ONIX 3.0: best practices for adapting to the new standard
  • Lessons from educational publishing: what can trade publishing look forward to? What needs to be done now to prepare?
  • ISBNs, ISTCs and more: best practices for dealing with bibliographic data and metadata
  • Niche or general: does it make sense to serve a small community well or have a little something for everyone to reduce risk?
  • Horizontal vs. vertical: moving from book-centric to audience-centric retailing
  • Making eBook purchasing simpler: what does an eBook consumer really want? How can we make it easier for them to get it?
  • Devices/projects for speed demos: 5 minutes to impress your audience
  • Keeping ahead of the curve: what changes are happening in culture (social, environmental, cultural) that need to be considered
  • Dealing with free content: other revenue streams, free as a marketing tool

Deadline for Submissions

Please submit your proposal to Morgan Cowie at mcowie@booknetcanada.ca. Submissions must be received by Friday, September 4th, 2009 to be eligible for consideration. Please include:

  • Organization name and your position
